At approximately 6:15 am today it suddenly hit me that today is Valentine's Day. I should've known, of course, as Joeness already texted to greet and the radio announced Bayani Fernando as advising all couples to just stay home this festive day and not go to malls, hotels, and motels so as to alleviate the traffic situation. Pfft. As if. Anyway I think I needed the endless love songs in the McDonald's background to hit me with a sledgehammer over the head for today's main event to finally sink in. And it did - I actually had this sinking feeling in my stomach, hopefully not induced by my third Sausage McMuffin in a week.
I realized it's the third year in a row that my Valentine's Day has sucked big time, but I think his year takes the cake as the happiest so far...
not! (Nineties flashback.) For some reason I feel so stressed today, and the couples gallivanting around campus do not make it any easier. One really
is the loneliest number. I welcomed the day by making like a freakazoid in black, smoking my Gudang babies alone in the Faura SPG at 7 am.
Anyway I don't feel sorry for myself, if that's what you're thinking. On the contrary, I think it's a great day for reflecting on my past loves, where I went wrong, where
he went wrong, and how we screwed each other over (pun not intended.) All in all, despite my lack of a significant other to give me flowers and PDA with all day, it's still going to be a great day. I have my family and my friends.
Great friends. What else is there to ask for?
Back when I was an angst-ridden freshman, I had to write a paper on any topic for English. I chose to write about Valentine's Day. It included the following lines:
Single people shouldn't feel so shitty everytime Valentine's Day comes around, when everybody else seems to come around in pairs. It's them that should feel forsaken, they're the ones with self-esteem problems.Ladies and gentlemen, I stand by my statement.
Happy Valentine, everyone.
